UPCOMING SURGICAL PRESENTATIONS

My twin sister and I were diagnosed with very severe cystic acne at 12 years old. Accutane and laser surgeries became the only options for treatment when prescription medications stopped working a few years down the road. Though acne seemed to be a common problem for teenagers, it still persisted at the age of 22. My struggle with acne over the past 10 years had a profound impact on me. After years of studying the causes of acne, I changed my lifestyle and completely revised my dietary habits and within a year, I started to see dramatic changes. Not only did this process result in clearing the acne entirely, I no longer suffer from other ailments such as chronic migraines!

In addition, my struggles to overcome decade old stubborn cystic acne by natural means taught me that the immune system provides a multitude of ways to support the body’s fight against ailments and offers a chance to heal itself. This experience changed my perspective on diseases and how changing life habits could enhance the immune system’s ability to fight diseases and become an integral part of therapy. I now apply my current nutritional knowledge to my cancer research studies.

One of my main research projects is not only to understand interaction between cancer cells and immune system, but also design novel therapies to control cancer growth by strengthening the immune system.

Cancer, in its many shapes and forms, has remained one of the leading causes of mortality worldwide and is anticipated to double in the next 15 years. Although surgical removal followed by chemotherapy may be initially effective, relapse is often observed. Thus the lack of effective conventional therapies has led me to the search for alternative therapeutic approaches such as immunotherapy, which combines natural defense mechanisms with novel drugs. My interest in this field was further strengthened due to the tremendous success in controlling blood related malignancies in the recent past. I have been part of various studies in the laboratory on ovarian and pancreatic cancers, both difficult to detect in early stages and with poor prognosis. It is my firm belief that immunotherapy can be a powerful treatment option which would eliminate tumor cells that are often unreachable by conventional therapies.

During the past four years, I have co-authored numerous research articles and presented at various national and international conferences, which have increased my knowledge of cancer.
